Donations in various forms are coming to healthcare workers particularly at the Southern Philippines Medical Center in Davao City, which is bearing the brunt of the fight against COVID 19 (Corona Virus Disease 2019) in the region.

In an interview with news reporters, Dr. Ricardo Audan, Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) Chief of Clinics and Health Emergency Management Bureau (HEMB) coordinator said they have received donations such as masks, gloves, and other essential medical supplies. Aside from medical equipment they also received food given by well-meaning citizens.

Audan said the donations started to pour when they announced that their medical supplies have started to run out.

He said the much needed donations is inspiring healthcare workers in their job. “Alam nila ‘yong hirap din namin dito sa SPMC. In a small way makahatag og motivation nga maganahan mi og work for the love of the people (They know the struggles we are facing here at SPMC. In a small way, this motivates us to work harder for the love of the people),” Audan said in an interview.

Among the donors is restaurateur Darence Patrick Co who owns Fat Cow and Asian Cow restaurants in Davao City. Co together with a team from his two restaurants prepared 120 meal packs consisting of chicken, pasta, rice and cakes. They gave the food packs to healthcare workers at the Southern Philippines Medical Center.

“Currently the food business is experiencing a massive slowdown because of COVID and quarantine. So I decided to use this time to help people that are on the front line,” Co said.

Kung kaya nato mg help maskin lutuan ra nato ug pagkaon mga doctor and nurse, I know ma appreciate na nila (If we can help, even just by cooking food for our doctors and nurses, I know they will appreciate it),” Co said.

Enough Personal Protective Equipment

According to Department of Health-XI Regional Director Anabelle Yumang there is enough supply of Personal Protective Equipment or PPEs.

“We have coming supplies from the central office, if it will arrive we will be providing them (Southern Philippine Medical Center), we are also providing government hospitals accepting PUI for COVID-19. “ Reg. Dir. Yumang said.

The DOH-XI will also be guiding local government units in the region in purchasing medical supplies such as PPEs and disinfectants.

For those wanting to donate the SPMC Employees Association has started a drive for donations particularly PPEs like face masks, gloves and disposable medical gowns. Donors can send their donations to the SPMC Main Information Desk or for more information they can call 0932-3514907.
