“Huwag mangopya dahil masakit ang maloko.”
This is one of the hugot lines used in a final exam by a college teacher in Naga City. The hugot lines used by Marvin Pila for the instructions in an exam for his students in the Bicol State College of Applied Sciences and Technology (BICAST) amused a great number of netizens, especially his students. The photo of the instruction portion of the exam was posted in the social media by one of his students, Kathlin De Leon, and immediately went viral.
“Nagtawanan kami, lahat kami maingay, pero madali na lang ‘yung exam (We all laughed, we were all noisy, but the exam was easy),” De Leon said.
The teacher explained that he wanted to catch the attention of his young students during the exam, thus, his hugot lines. He mentioned that their focus is hard to catch given their distraction from the internet, games, and love life. He was eager to encourage them to learn.
Although the post earned a few negative reactions, most believed that Pila’s strategy was effective. The head of BICAST, Richard Cordial, mentioned that the examination should be made formal but did not see anything wrong with what the instructor did.
“Tingin ko they were banking on academic freedom. I don’t see really wrong dito. Nag-iisip ‘yung teacher ng ibang paraan. Ang motto namin ay to do everything possible para matuto (I think that they were banking on academic freedom. I don’t see really wrong here. The teacher was thinking of a different way. Our motto is to do everything possible for learning),” De Leon said.
The results of Pila’s examination have not yet been released but his students were able to finish the examination in thirty minutes.
