The Philippines continues to shine again in international beauty competitions during the inaugural Miss Tourism Worldwide 2018 pageant held in Batam, Indonesia on September 9, 2018.
The pageant promotes tourism and cultural exchange.
25-year-old Zara Carbonell was hailed as Miss Tourism Worlwide and had become the official ambassador of tourism for all countries across the globe.
With the title earned, she now holds the responsibility of “promoting underrated places and protecting those already popular”.
“I’ve always believed that the beauty in tourism isn’t in being a stranger in a foreign land but instead finding home in all the places you’re at and this is definitely something I’d want to share,” Carbonell said.
Carbonell also seeks to promote the beauty of the Philippines and hopes to correct certain misconceptions about the country and to promote off beaten track places. She aims to use her reign to promote purposeful tourism through self-awareness and education by working closely with the ASEAN countries.
Interestingly, Carbonell had competed in numerous pageants such as Miss Earth in 2011, Bb. Unibersidad in 2012, Miss Teenager Universe-Philippines, World University-Philippines, Miss World in 2017. She admits that her journey towards the crown was a series of ups and downs.
“The journey into pageantry was very eventful for me I had to take so much losses before getting to this win. My greatest takeaway would be that the process is far greater than the outcome because it’s what hones you, holds you, and heals you…Life gives you what you need already with the understanding of what you’ll be taking away from it and how every experience will shape you. It really is a rough road that gets you there,” Carbonell said.
